Are you procrastinating right now?
You can overcome this problem!
First, think of what you 'should' be doing.
Got it? Now click here to get started...
Think about the task you want to complete, and realize that you do not have to do it. You don't have to do your taxes, or your homework, or even eat. There are consequences of course, but you still have the choice.
The problem of procrastination often arises as a result of our inner resentment of having to do something - even something we might want to do! The habit of procrastination is often our subconscious way of expressing this resentment through self destruction; by being as inefficient as we can.
Pretty silly huh?
The good news is this: we don't have to do anything at all. Once you realize this, you are free to actively choose to do things. Making this conscious choice can combat our annoying subconscious tendencies to undermine our effectiveness.
So, if you get that the choice is yours, and you've decided to get something done, let's move on...
Think about the task you want to complete, and what the very first step will be. Opening your word processor or text editor? Putting on your gardening gloves? Don't worry about how you will finish it just yet – only think about the first step.
It's fair to say that procrastination isn't the inability to work, but to start working. Most people find that once they get started on the task at hand, their anxiety is forgotten.
Later on it might be helpful to break your task down into managable parts, but for now just think about the very first step and forget about the rest.
So, what's the first step? Picture it, and picture yourself doing it.
At this point we know three things. Lets review them quickly before wrapping up.
- You have something in mind which you felt you ought to be doing right now, but instead you're on this website
- You don't have to do it, but, probably for some very good reasons, you've decided you're going to do it
- You know the very first thing you need to do to get started
Think about these for a moment before you move on.
Lets count down from 30. Think about how you'll feel having overcome the first, and hardest hurdle of your task - getting started. Less anxious, relieved, accomplished.
Breath deeply and be calm. When the timer reaches zero, and not before, go ahead and take the first step of your task.
How'd you go?
